Literacy and Numeracy

Literacy at LPS

At Lancefield Primary School we focus on strengthening all students to become competent and confident learners across all modes of Literacy - Reading and Viewing, Writing and Speaking and Listening. Our students are involved in a minimum of 10 hours of literacy learning each week.

In our classrooms we focus on delivering our teaching and learning based on Structured Literacy (an evidence-based best practice approach for teaching foundational literacy skills) and follow our Literacy Block Model, with clear Learning Intentions and Success Criteria. Every teacher uses explicit, direct instruction to facilitate the teaching and learning of English across the three strands of the Victorian Curriculum - Language, Literature and Literacy.

Reading at Lancefield Primary School focuses on teaching our students the five essential components of reading, Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension. Throughout the week students engage with learning to encompass all of these crucial components through a range of programs and tasks such as:

·       Jolly Phonics

·       Jolly Grammar

·       Heart Words

·       High Frequency Words

·       Reader’s Theatre and partner reading to strengthen fluency

·       Explicit vocabulary sessions

·       Whole class reading to develop and build prior knowledge to support and enhance reading comprehension

·       Independent reading to build stamina and apply reading skills

Writing at Lancefield Primary School focuses on teaching our students to become fluent, efficient and creative writers. Throughout the week students engage with a range of learning experiences to strengthen their writing skills such as:

·       Jolly Phonics

·       Jolly Grammar

·       Seven Steps to Writing Success

·       Handwriting and typing

·       Sentence level work, to develop the foundations of writing

·       Spelling of high frequency words

·       Grammar and word study

·       Genre writing sessions, to develop the structure and different expectations of text types e.g. narratives and persuasive

·       Editing practices

Speaking & Listening at Lancefield Primary School focuses on teaching our students the skills to become quality listeners and confident speakers. Students in our classrooms are provided with daily opportunities and explicit teaching to become proficient at speaking and listening through the following experiences:

·       Jolly Phonics

·       Rhyming and singing

·       Daily morning circles

·       Oral fluency practice

·       Oral presentations

Numeracy at LPS

At Lancefield Primary School, we are committed to providing all students with high-quality mathematics instruction that caters to their individual point of need. Teachers use a range of assessment tools to guide planning, monitor progress, and inform teaching. All students participate in daily mathematics lessons designed to build confidence, understanding, and success in numeracy.

Our mathematics program is grounded in explicit teaching, evidence-based teaching strategies, and the Gradual Release of Responsibility model, supporting students to develop strong mathematical understanding, fluency, confidence, and problem-solving skills. Lessons are carefully structured to ensure consistency across the school and to support all learners.

Activate Prior Learning – Lessons begin with a short review activity designed to revisit previously taught concepts and activate prior knowledge. These activities strengthen retention, fluency, and confidence while preparing students for new learning.

Daily Review – Students participate in daily review activities that provide repeated practice of previously taught skills and concepts. This supports long-term retention and helps students develop fluency and automaticity with number facts and mathematical processes.

I Do – The teacher explicitly teaches and models the focus skill or concept for the lesson using clear explanations, worked examples, and mathematical language.

Check for Understanding – Teachers regularly monitor student understanding throughout lessons using evidence-based strategies such as mini whiteboards, questioning, observation, and discussion. This allows teachers to provide immediate feedback, clarify misconceptions, and adjust instruction to meet student needs.

We Do – Students work collaboratively with teacher guidance to practise new learning through scaffolded examples, questioning, and discussion.

You Do – Students independently apply their learning through differentiated tasks that cater to individual learning needs. This may include individual or small-group stamina work, investigations, and problem-solving activities.

Reflection – Teachers and students reflect on the learning that has occurred by discussing strategies, sharing feedback, explaining thinking, and identifying next steps.

Mathematics lessons are varied and engaging, incorporating hands-on tasks, open-ended questioning, games, collaborative learning opportunities, and a wide range of manipulatives to support conceptual understanding.

Maths topics are connected to the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 Mathematics strands:

  • Number

  • Algebra

  • Measurement

  • Space

  • Statistics

  • Probability

Chromebooks are also used as a tool to support and extend learning, allowing students to engage with mathematical concepts in a variety of interactive and meaningful ways.

Numeracy is fundamental to a student’s ability to learn successfully at school and to participate confidently in everyday life. At Lancefield Primary School, we aim to develop capable and confident mathematicians who can apply their mathematical knowledge and skills across learning areas and in real-world contexts.
