Australian Sign Language (Auslan) is the language of the Deaf community of Australia. It has many dialects and in Victoria we use the Southern Dialect. Auslan is an expressive language and highly relies on hand shapes, movements and facial expression to convey messages. It uses its own grammatical system that is separate from Australian English. Instead of word order and sentence structure Auslan uses movement to convey grammar and meaning at the same time.

At Lancefield Primary School, all staff are level 1 Auslan trained. Classroom teachers teach Auslan lessons, with students practicing skills throughout the week. Topics learnt include the alphabet, numbers, colours, clothing, greetings, introductions and sayings.
